在open school这个词组当中，open可作形容词。这样一来，就变成了“开放的学校”。因此，这个表达并不准确。我们所说的“开学”其实是说，新学期开始，同学们重新回到学校上学，而放到英文中“open school” 这个词组只是单纯指: 学校开放了它的大门，有可能是学校的“开放日 open day”。很明显，这个词组并没有我们所说的“开学”这一层意思。
一般，“开学”可以用school opens 或者new term begins 来表达，表示新的学期开始。
School opens in September.
The academic year begins when school opens in September.
学年是从学校九月开学时开始。
“开学”是新学期的开始，所以可以用new semester（或term） starts/begins来表示；我们都知道“学期”是semester/term，那么这两个词有什么区别呢？
semester 适用于美国，一学年分为两个学期：
the spring/ fall semester
the spring/ summer/ fall term
“a new school year kicks off”也表示开学。其中，“school year”是指学年，而“kick off”在足球比赛中表示中线开球，延伸过来就变成“.…..开始”，所以这句话可以翻译成“一个新学年的开始”，即“开学”。
开学就意味着大家都要返回学校，因此，back to school 也表示开学。
John went back to school on this Monday. He went to school by public transport.
My sister will be back to school on next Monday.
