The electric guitar, America’s rock ’n’ roll talisman, grew out of 1930s Hawaiian music and jazz, according to the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, Arizona. A new exhibition documents early efforts to electrify and amplify the sound of the violin and other acoustic instruments as early as 1919. Amateurs and tinkerers seeking a bigger sound, curator Rich Walter says, hit pay dirt with the electrified guitar. Prototypes were played on the lap, dulcimer style, by depressing the strings with a steel bar, producing the trebly ringing tones that popularized acoustic Hawaiian music in the 1930s. The best-known antecedent to today’s electric guitar was the work of designer Gary Beauchamp.
