The Eagle-Eyed Elderly Keeping Beijing Safe

‘Chaoyang Masses’ vigilante group helps police keep tabs on thieves, celebrities, and would-be terrorists.

Her red armband says it all: “On duty.” From her perch behind the window of a small guard post, 71-year-old Wang Aiqing keeps a careful eye on the comings and goings at the apartment complex where she lives in the capital city’s Chaoyang District.

For the past decade or so, Wang has belonged to a vigilante group that Chinese netizens have nicknamed the “Chaoyang Qunzhong,” or “Chaoyang Masses.” These volunteer guards sign up through their neighborhood committees to surveil the area for crimes ranging from the sale of stolen e-bikes and street corner scams to narcotics dealing and potential terrorist threats.

Beijing has 130,000 registered members of the Chaoyang Masses, reported the Beijing Morning Post. Some 60,000 of these are considered active participants, averaging more than 20,000 police tip-offs per month.

In recent years, the civilian team has uncovered information leading to the arrests of celebrities involved in drug scandals. In the first 10 months of 2015, tip-offs from the Chaoyang Masses helped the police crack 1,023 cases and detain 810 suspects in various crimes. Netizens have referred to the group as “the world’s fifth most powerful intelligence agency.”

题目:

The Eagle-Eyed Elderly Keeping Beijing Safe

Three cannabis plants were found by eagle-eyed police officers.

1)特点:eagle-eyed 眼尖的;

‘Chaoyang Masses’ vigilante group helps police keep tabs on thieves, celebrities, and would-be terrorists.

mass 本义是“大量”,比如形容某人发量多,可以说 a mass of black hair 一头黑发(羡慕ing),如果是 the masses 则表示“群众”,比如发展科技要从娃娃抓起,制作更多的普及科学知识的电视节目,我们可以说:a TV programme that brings science to the masses 普及科学知识的电视节目。

Tech giants are keeping tabs on our every movement.

Her red armband says it all: “On duty.” From her perch behind the window of a small guard post, 71-year-old Wang Aiqing keeps a careful eye on the comings and goings at the apartment complex where she lives in the capital city’s Chaoyang District.

镜头先落到她手臂上带着的红袖章,进行细节描写:red armband,然后镜头拉远,拍到了她所处的位置:a perch behind the window of a small guard post,接下来聚焦她的神态动作:keeps a careful eye,人物形象非常丰满。

Her red armband says it all The notice says 'Keep Out'.

on duty 是“执勤”的意思,反义词是 off duty “休班”。

From her perch behind the window of a small guard post

71-year-old 交代了年龄,对应了题目中的 elderly;keeps a careful eye on 对应了题目的 eagle-eyed 和摘要的 keep tabs on.

the comings and goings

at the apartment complex 中,complex 作形容词常表示“复杂的”,同 complicated,这里作动词,指“建筑群”,比如 a sports complex 综合体育场,an industrial complex 工业建筑群。

Her red armband says it all: “On duty.” From her perch behind the window of a small guard post, 71-year-old Wang Aiqing keeps a careful eye on the comings and goings at the apartment complex where she lives in the capital city’s Chaoyang District.

For the past decade or so, Wang has belonged to a vigilante group that Chinese netizens have nicknamed the “Chaoyang Qunzhong,” or “Chaoyang Masses.” These volunteer guards sign up through their neighborhood committees to surveil the area for crimes ranging from the sale of stolen e-bikes and street corner scams to narcotics dealing and potential terrorist threats.

that Chinese netizens have nicknamed the “Chaoyang Qunzhong,” or “Chaoyang Masses”是a vigilante group的定语从句,其中 that 代指 a vigilante group,在从句中作 nickname 的宾语。
We nicknamed her Sunny because of her happy nature.
Chinese netizens have nicknamed a vigilante group the “Chaoyang Qunzhong,” or “Chaoyang Masses” 中国网民把这一治安会称为“朝阳群众”。

These volunteer guards sign up through their neighborhood committees to surveil the area for crimes 中,sign up 指“登记、注册”,也可以用 register 替换,比如你首次使用某个网页或app,就要 sign up / register,以后再用时只需要 log in(登录)即可。

surveil 是动词,和前面的 keep tabs/eyes on 是同义替换,用法为 surveil+地点+for+事情,表示“监控某地的某情况”,所以文中 surveil the area for crimes 的意思是:监控该地区的不法行为。

有哪些不法行为呢?crimes后面跟了个分词后置定语,进行补充:ranging from the sale of stolen e-bikes and street corner scams to narcotics dealing and potential terrorist threats
range from...to... 到...”,ranging from...to...

Beijing has 130,000 registered members of the Chaoyang Masses, reported the Beijing Morning Post. Some 60,000 of these are considered active participants, averaging more than 20,000 police tip-offs per month.

Economic growth is expected to average 6% next year.
The airport averages about a thousand flights a month.

tip-off 是名词,指 a secret warning or piece of information, especially one given to the police about illegal activities 尤指给警察的“密告、举报”,如果把连字符去掉就变成了动词 tip off “举报、告密”,举个例子:
Li Yundi was arrested after police were tipped off about the prostitution.

In recent years, the civilian team has uncovered information leading to the arrests of celebrities involved in drug scandals. In the first 10 months of 2015, tip-offs from the Chaoyang Masses helped the police crack 1,023 cases and detain 810 suspects in various crimes. Netizens have referred to the group as “the world’s fifth most powerful intelligence agency.”

uncover 一词来自 cover,它本义是“遮盖”,在前面加一个否定前缀“un-”就变成了 uncover “发现、揭露、揭发”,英文解释是:to discover sth that was previously hidden or secret,文中 uncovered information 就是“揭露信息,提供线索”的意思。

leading to the arrests of celebrities是分词形式的后置定语,修饰information,意思是:这些线索导致了一些明星的被捕。

be involved in 表示“被卷入”。

helped the police crack 1,023 cases 中,crack在这里不是“打碎、使破碎”的意思,而是熟词僻义,表示“解决”,同 solve,后面加问题之类的词语,比如 crack a problem 解决一个问题,crack a case 侦破一起案件。
