Irvine High School, according to U.S. news, ranks 1003rd nationally and 163rd within California. With over 2000 students enrolled, it is one of the four high schools at Irvine Unified School District. IHS offers a broad and comprehensive selection of classes. Within the curriculum, there are many academically challenging classes that help to prepare students for the rigorous demands of college such as College Preparatory (CP) and Advanced Placement (AP). There are also courses that enable students to pursue areas of self-interest and/or vocational training.

The most interesting feature of Irvine High School (IHS) is perhaps its unique scheduling system unlike any other high school in the district -- since September 1996, IHS implemented a blended block schedule, resulting in lower class size and a focus on fewer academics at a time. As opposed to the traditional scheduling system, IHS has four 90-minute-period each day, and each day is distinguished as an A-day, or a B-day. Some classes, including CP English, CP World Studies, CP History, and CP Foreign Languages, are called “solid block”, meeting every day for a semester. In these classes, students complete a year's worth of work in a semester, earning 10 credits toward graduation. Other classes including lab science, all AP classes, upper levels of foreign languages, and some elective classes, are called “alternating block”, meeting every other day for a year.

This system of scheduling has many advantages. With no empty periods, a student could have the capacity to earn 80 credits each year instead of the 60 credits the traditional 6-period schedule allows. With the choice of alternating and solid block, scheduling becomes more flexible. A full-time teacher teaches fewer student each day but more classes and students year-long. Retaking a class becomes easier, and the longer class periods allows for a better learning cycle.
