Florida on Sunday broke the national record for the biggest single-day number of positive coronavirus cases in any state since the beginning of the pandemic.
Also, Disney World is now open!
The Magic Kingdom and the Animal Kingdom, welcomed back a limited number of temperature-checked visitors, with some attractions and character interactions unavailable as safety precautions.

In addition to providing employees with protective gear, the company added 4,000 hand-sanitizing stations, and installed plexiglass partitions everywhere, including inside the queuing areas of rides.
To limit capacity, Disney no longer allows visitors to walk up and buy tickets, instead making blocks of “reservations” available online. Some blocks for July were gone in minutes when Disney opened the site on June 24.
After months of home quarantining, the chance to have some wholesome fun and perhaps touch a childhood memory seemed to outweigh the risk of catching the virus for visitors.

I’m so overwhelmed with emotion. The last few months have been so hard. We have just felt so defeated. Being here gives me the strength to go on.

“Re-opening the theme parks is only putting our guests, employees, and families at higher risk for contracting COVID-19.”

Twitter was flooded with negative commentary from users who judged the reopening from afar. People used words like “irresponsible,” “disappointed” and “greedy” to describe Disney’s decision to stick to its reopening plans even as coronavirus cases surged.
“I struggle to understand what is so broken in your life that can only be fixed by going to Disney World during a pandemic.”
“I can’t think of any other reason for Disney world reopening, unless Florida is going for the world record in COVID-19 cases and deaths.”

The safety recommendations for the general public, such as social distancing and wearing a mask to prevent Covid-19 transmission, are “almost impossible to really implement effectively in an area like a theme park.”
