用作程度副词:rather cold, rather nice用来表达选择和偏好:green rather than blue, coffee rather than tea, slowly rather than quickly
Rather 作程度副词:
1) 用来强调形容词或副词,意思与quite相似(当quite与形容词或副词连用时)。
而rather比quite更正式,常用它来表达意想不到的事:
They walked rather slowly.
2)Rather + adjective + noun
对于a/an,通常用rather a/an + adjective + noun,但也可以用a rather + adjective + noun。
对于其他限定词(some, those),可以用:限定词+ rather + adjective + noun:
We had to wait rather a long time.
He helped her out of rather an uncomfortable situation.
I had some rather bad news today.
3)Rather a + noun
Rather a+名词:在书面表达中更为常见,尤其是写作:
It was rather a surprise to find them in the house before me.
4)Rather a lot
常用来指大量:
It cost me rather a lot of money.
也用来表示“经常”:
They went to the library rather a lot.
5)Rather + verb
用来强调动词,最常用的搭配动词是enjoy, hope, like:
He rather liked the idea of a well-paid job in Japan.
6)Rather: 比较
在写作中,常用rather + more / less +形容词或副词来与某事进行比较:

7)Rather like:非常相似
用来指代相似之处,表示“非常类似于”:

1)当比较两种选择或偏好时,用来表达更重视某一个选择或偏好。
常用于并行结构中,可以与两个形容词/副词/名词/动词原形或-ing形式。
He wanted to be an actor rather than a comedian.
2)Rather than通常用在两个被比较的事物之间,也可把它用在句子的开头。
当与动词连用时,要使用动词原形或动词分词形式(-ing):
Rather than pay the taxi fare, he walked home. (用动词原形最为常见)
