Writing Your Résumé

When it comes to job hunting, the first thing you’re going to want to do is update your résumé. This is where recruiters will look to learn more about you and your skills. And it’s what they’ll use to decide who to invite for an interview. So let’s look at some quick tips that will ensure your résumé stands out from the crowd.

First, consider the basics. Your name and contact details should go at the top of the page, followed by a brief summary of your skills and qualifications, and a list of your recent work experience. But avoid going into too much detail. Clarity and conciseness should be your guiding principles.

Keep adjectives like passionate, reliable, enthusiastic to a minimum. Instead, use strong action words like “launched,” “negotiated,” “implemented” and “completed’. And be specific. Outline exactly how many sales you made or how many people you managed. A few standout statistics or key points will get the recruiter’s attention.

Finally, avoid using unusual fonts, graphics or pictures. Gimmicks like these can be off-putting. And don’t forget to read through everything carefully before you hit the send button.
