For over 40 years, working as a rural teacher in one of China's poorest areas, ZhangGuimei has more than a dozen illnesses. She has been admitted to hospital for emergency care and cheated death many times. She has no property of her own and still lives in the school dormitory. Most of her salaries and monetary awards received over the years are donated to schools, children and people in need.
She is still at her job, the headteacher of China's first tuition-free girls' high school,“mother”of more than 130 children in an orphanage. For years, her school changed life for more than 1,800 girls from extreme poverty. More than 40 percent got into China's top universities. Girls who received at least nine years of education increased from 50 percent to 90 percent.
Zhang Guimei has been trying to change things for rural women. She sought to do so after seeing the double standards. Parents encourage boys to further their education but encourage girls to marry and start working young. Providing education to these girls would empower them to pursue the jobs they want.
Today, the girl graduates have built a good life for themselves, working as doctors, police officers. Some are pursuing a master's degree, and some choose to join the army. Others, under their teacher's influence, became teachers and volunteered to work in rural areas. Ms. Zhang continued to toil and moil. She was deeply convinced in what she had done,“We all live and fall sick and die. But when you are willing to give your own life to change a young girl's life, it becomes a life worth living. It's fine to do that.”
