Chemotherapy acts specifically against rapidly growing cells. Because cancer cells are rapidly growing, they are preferentially affected by chemotherapy.
Chemotherapy can be used to cure cancer in certain instances; other times, chemotherapy is used just to shrink a cancer to make it more surgically correctable or to ease cancer pain.
Chemotherapy is sometimes given alone as part of cancer treatment, but most often it is used in combination with other therapies such as surgery, radiation therapy and (★). (Internal Medicine)
