White-collar workers in the tech industry are already seeing an uptick in layoffs. In fact, thousands of white-collar tech workers have already lost their jobs in 2022.
Here's a look at a few of the companies instituting layoffs on a large scale:

Twitter: After the Elon Musk takeover, 50% of the workforce was laid off. With that, around 3,700 employees lost their jobs.

其中，furlough 是因为无工作可干的“停薪留职”、休假、暂时解雇/下岗，一般是临时的，但也可能变成永久的。
termination 则是解除雇佣关系，包括下文列举的各种辞职辞退形式。
以上介绍的是公司原因导致的“裁员”“解雇”“解聘”。
下面我们来说说个人原因导致的“辞退”。
首先，不管员工是否有过错，这种辞退都可以用 fire。
在美国的劳动法里存在一种招聘方式叫“at-will employment”（自由雇佣制），员工可以无条件被解雇，“means you can be fired for any reason or no reason at all”。所以，fire 还是比较中性的，不一定是员工有过错。
不管员工是否有过错，表示“辞退”/“辞职”还可以用 discharge：
注意，这个 discharge 可以包括员工自己主动提出的辞职，范围比较广。且有返聘的可能。
如果是因为员工自身的过错，或者合同到期等员工方面的原因，导致员工被公司开除或辞退，即“被炒鱿鱼”，该用哪个词？
此时也可以用上面的 fire 和 sack，不过最正式最明确的表达还是 dismiss：（名词形式 dismissal）
