今天在路透社上看到一篇报道，其中加拿大总理特鲁多说了这样一句话：

 

“We’ve been competing and China has been from time to time very cleverly playing us off each other in an open market competitive way. We need to do a better job of working together and standing strong so that China can’t, you know, play the angles and divide us one against the other.”

“我们（西方国家）一直在相互竞争。一次又一次，中国很聪明地通过公开市场竞争的方式，挑拨我们之间的关系。我们要更好地团结起来，坚定立场，不能让中国一边充好人，一边在我们中间制造对立。”

结合一下采访的上下文，特鲁多大概的意思就是，中国有意利用自身的经济实力和市场体量，鼓动西方国家为获得市场准入而相互竞争。中国此举旨在挑拨西方国家之间关系，制造对立。

 

嗯，这话说的真可谓是：

 

特鲁多用了一个很有意思的表达：“play us off each other"，具体是什么意思呢？

简单来说，就是挑起别人之间的争端，自己从中渔利，也就是中文里的“挑拨离间”。那么英文里的“挑拨离间”还有其他说法吗？

1. play /divide against

首先我们要注意，英文的一个重要特点就是同义转换，这一点在追求表达多样性的新闻报道中体现得尤为明显。所以如果稍微通读一下这篇短短的报道，我们就会发现两个同义表达：

 

"We need to do a better job of working together and standing strong so China can't play the angles and divide us one against the other."

 

Western countries should have a united front against China to prevent the Asian state from using commercial interests to play them against each other.

2. sow discord

表达“挑拨离间”，还有一个很形象的说法是sow discord。

 

 

从字面上看，sow是“播撒”，discord是“不和”，因此sow discord指的就是“挑拨离间”、“搬弄是非”。

 

sow discord还有很深的宗教含义。在《旧约》“箴言篇”（Proverbs）中有这么一段话：

最后一个用得比较多的表达是drive a wedge between。其中wedge的本意是“楔子”，drive a wedge between就是在别人中间打入楔子，引申过来就是挑拨离间、制造不和。

我们敦促美方停止在有关问题上散布谣言，不要搞政治操弄，不要满世界挑拨离间。

 

We urge the US side to stop spreading rumors on these issues, quit its political manipulation, and stop trying to drive a wedge between countries.

divisive的英文释义是：causing a lot of disagreement between people.这个词一般是形容某个issue很有争议，比如socially divisive policies（社会领域颇具争议的政策）。这里放在China的前面，不就是想把中国塑造成一个热衷于在西方阵营内部“挑拨离间”的形象吗？

 

这小词儿用的，挺鸡贼啊。
