The Charge of the Light Brigade 是一首著名的英国诗歌，作者是 Alfred Tennyson (1809 - 1892)，写作于 1854 年。诗歌讲述的，是英国军队的一支骑兵劲旅、当年在克里米亚战争中的一次冲锋进攻。
就这次进攻，虽然收到的命令中存在明显的错误，但指挥 Light Brigade 的军官并没有询问和请求澄清，600 多位士兵也没有提出质疑。

Light Brigade 这首诗歌，分为 6 个 Verses 段落，描述了骑兵旅的 600 多名军人，从冲锋开始、到达敌军阵地、之后被迫撤退、再返回到自己阵地的这个过程。
开头的两段描述的是：士兵们策马发起冲锋，即将进入敌军火炮的射程，头脑中回想着刚才上级传来的命令。
在第3段中，敌军的火炮响起，炮弹飞落下来；第4段中，士兵们拔出战刀，冲入敌军的阵地、砍杀敌军炮兵，之后被迫撤退，但人数已经不是最初的 600 多人。
第5段描写轻骑旅撤退返回的过程，士兵们再次承受敌军炮火的轰击，又有很多人受伤、死亡。
最后一段，感叹赞颂骑兵们如何英勇地履行职责，呼吁人们向参加冲锋的 600 多位士兵表示敬意。

半个 League 相当于公制的2500米，是Light Brigade 冲锋前进时、从起点到达敌军阵地的距离。在这半个 Light league 的路途中，600多位士兵如同在死亡的山谷中策马前进。
“Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns!” he said.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
士兵们的头脑中，还在回想刚才传达命令的军官所说的话，“前进，向着那边的敌军炮兵阵地发起冲锋”。

Was there a man dismayed?
Not, though the soldier knew
Someone had blundered.
引号中的话，是诗歌作者提出的疑问：听到这个命令，这些骑兵中，是否有人感到失望和不理解，想提出询问呢？
接着，作者自己做出了回答：各位骑兵战士虽然心中质疑，却没有提出询问；但他们都知道，一定是有人搞错了命令。

骑兵们没有提出询问的原因是：他们的职责不是对命令做出答复，他们的职责不是思考或讨论下达这个命令的原因和根据，他们唯一的职责就是，执行命令的要求、哪怕会因此失去生命。

Volleyed and thundered;
Light Brigade 的士兵们在山谷中骑着马冲向敌军的炮兵阵地；除了前面目标阵地的火炮迎头发起了轰击，山谷两侧的山脊上也分别架设着敌军的火炮、同时从左侧和右侧发起轰击。

Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of hell
Rode the six hundred.
实心的 Shot 炮弹、和在空中炸裂的Shell炮弹，像暴雨一样飞落下来；但Light Brigade的士兵们仍然策马向前冲锋，哪怕前面就是死亡、就是地狱。
19世纪时火炮的 Shot 实心炮弹的威力；图片中是重型骑兵的胸甲，而 Light Brigade 属于轻骑兵、是没有盔甲保护的。
Flashed all their sabres bare,
Flashed as they turned in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
All the world wondered.
敌军的阵地就在眼前，Light Brigade的士兵们抽出了佩刀、在空中挥舞、雪亮的刀刃发出耀眼的光；冲入敌军阵地之后，士兵们奋力砍杀敌军的炮兵。看到这种景象，全世界的人们都为之感叹。
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right through the line they broke;

在火炮的硝烟之中，Light Brigade 的士兵们突破了敌军的防线；敌军无力抵挡，溃不成军。
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.
之后，Light Brigade 的士兵们调转马头、返回最初出发的阵地；但这时，他们的人数已经不再是发起冲锋时的 600 多人。

Stormed at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell.
和之前冲向敌军阵地时一样，当 Light Brigade 的士兵们经过山谷中返回到自己的阵地时，两侧山脊上敌军的火炮、以及身后敌军重新集结的炮兵阵地，又同时发起了轰击。很多士兵和马匹，都在炮火中倒下。

经过这场英勇的战斗，Light Brigade 的 600 多人中，只有这些士兵、从死亡和地狱中逃脱。

The Charge of the Light Brigade 写作和发表于 1850 年代，今天人们对这首诗歌的理解，已经和当初完全不同，要更加复杂和丰富。
有一部美国电影 The Blind Side，其中的主人公名叫 Michael，是一位高中学生；在升入大学之前写作一篇重要的“Essay 议论文”时，就选择了 Light Brigade 这首诗歌作为题目。
在作文中，17岁的主人公通过这首诗歌思考了 Courage 和 Honor，这样写道：
Courage is a hard thing to figure. You can have courage based on a dumb idea or mistake, but you're not supposed to question adults, or your coach or your teacher, because they make the rules.
Maybe they know best, but maybe they don't. It all depends on who you are, where you come from. Didn't at least one of the six hundred guys think about giving up and joining with the other side? I mean, Valley of Death, that's pretty salty stuff.

I think that's what the writer was saying, that you should hope for courage and try for honor, and maybe even pray that the people telling you what to do have some, too.
Courage 这个概念不难理解，大多被对应为中文的“勇敢、勇气”。Courage 是指一种能力，也就是，能够面对危险、困难、痛苦，面对别人或时势形成的障碍阻挠，而继续坚持、不显示出畏惧和退缩。
相比之下，Honor是一个更难掌握的概念；在学习和使用英语时，就 Honor 的含义存在很多误解、而且十分普遍。
Honor 所对应的中文说法，包括“荣誉、荣耀、光荣”等，都是比较模糊的概念。但在英语中，Honor 还有“尽到自己的职责、做到自己应该做的事情”这种含义。
电影中的高中学生所思考的 Honor，就是这种含义：600 多名士兵，发挥自己的Courage、不顾生命危险去执行命令、发起冲锋，就是履行了自己的职责、达到了自己的 Honor.
但是，上级指挥官和传令员是否做到了他们的 Honor？也就是，是否正确地制订、明确地传达将由士兵们冒死来执行的命令？就此，当时战场上的士兵们就无力干涉了，最多只能希望、那些下达命令的人们也能有些 Honor、尽到他们的职责。
The Charge of the Light Brigade 这个事件，在发生之后的大约一百年间，一直被用来激励人们的“执行力、听从指挥“的精神。丁尼生的这首以此命名的诗歌，曾广泛在学校中背诵。
但在今天，人们对这首诗歌的理解，早已发生了根本的改变。在牛津词典中，对这次冲锋的描述是这样的：
The Charge of the Light Brigade, a famous attack by British cavalry during the Crimean War in 1854 .
An order was understood wrongly, and the soldiers, armed only with swords , were sent into a valley with heavy guns on both sides of them. 247 out of 637 men were killed.
The event is remembered as an outstanding example of bad military leadership and the blind courage of soldiers obeying orders.
It is described in a famous poem by Tennyson.
