最近在B站上学习一门课：北大中文系教授戴锦华老师的电影课《性别与凝视》。课程挑选了20部经典影片，探讨和解读性别与社会问题。《消失的爱人》（Gone girl）便是戴锦华老师选的第一部作品。
这周的「看电影学英语」专栏，我们就来学习《消失的爱人》这部片子，我把电影看了两遍，从中选择了7个实用表达，4个熟词僻义，分享给同学们。
和往常一样，我不会就词讲词，而是会串联各大外刊的例句、其他美剧电影的例句一起展开讲解。同学们一边听视频，一边跟读，一边记忆。
You got the makings of a real man cave.
have / get the makings of sth 是一个短语，指「具备了成为…的素质、能力、条件」(to have the qualities that are necessary to become sth)。
举个例子：He has the makings of a world-class footballer.他具有世界一流足球运动员的素质。
《金融时报》一篇关于腾讯做带货直播的文章有这样一句话：
Local social media giant Tencent has all the makings of a winner in this hot new market.
中国本土的社交媒体巨头腾讯具备在这个火爆的新市场中成为赢家的所有条件。
再扩展两个关于making的高频词：
1️⃣sth is the making of sb 指「...造就了某人，使...成为更有作为的人」(to make sb become a better or more successful person)，主 语 sth 可以是一部作品、一段时间或经历等等。
比如：大学造就了乔。
University was the making of Joe.
再比如，一些初出茅庐的演员常常靠某一部作品迅速走红，也可以用到这个词。
举个例子，《哈利波特》电影成就了艾玛·沃 森：
The Harry Porter series was the making of Emma Watson.
我在电影《又一年》里也遇见了这个词：
This could be the making of you, Mary.
2️⃣ in the making
正在制作过程中的，表示「酝酿中的，在形成中的，在成长中的」，往往用于名词之后，作后置定语。
举个例子，《经济学人》一篇关于互联网发展的文章有这样一句话：
In 2007 more humans lived in cities than outside them for the first time. It was a transition 5,000 years in the making.地球上住在城市里的人数在 2007年首次超过了住在城市外的人数。这一转变历时五千年。
sth is ... years in the making 表示事物的生产、形成或持续过程长达...年。此处 5,000 years in the making 是说城市居民多于非城市居民这个转变过程经历了 5000 年之久。
再举个例子， 《飘》写了近十年时间，我们可以说：The book Gone with the windwas nearly ten years in the making.
再比如《纽约时报》一篇关于女性争取选举权过程的文章提到：
But it wasn't until 1917 when women here won the right to vote—a breakthrough 70 years and three generations in the making. 但是这里的女 直到 1917 年才赢得选举权——一个历经七十年、三代人才取得的突破。
specter [ˈspektər] 有「鬼魂，幽灵」的意思，相当于ghost。
现在specter 常用来表示萦绕在心头的「恐惧，恐慌」。
raise the specter of sth 是一个惯用搭配，指「引起...的恐惧」。
举个例子：The recession is again raising the specter of unemployment.这次经济衰退再次引起了人们对失业的恐惧。
注意specter是美式拼写，spectre为英式拼写。
我们再来看两个《经济学人》里的例子。
《经济学人》一篇关于日本企业的文章有这样一句话：
The pandemic and the spectre of further American sanctions against Chinese companies such as Huawei, a telecoms-equipment giant, are making Japanese companies think about the stability of their supply chains, not just efficiency. 受疫情影响，以及担忧美国未来进一步对电信设备巨头华为之类的中国企业施加制裁，日本公司开始考虑自己供应链的稳定性，而不仅仅是效率。
再比如《经济学人》一篇关于中国中等收入陷阱的文章有这样一句话：
China is haunted by the spectre of the “middle-income trap”, the notion that emerging economies grow quickly out of poverty only to get stuck before they get rich.
“中等收入陷阱”的阴影笼罩着中国，这个概念是指新兴经济体在迅速脱离贫困后停滞不前，迟迟不能晋升富裕国家。
haunt 为动词，指「缠绕，萦绕」，有一种被鬼缠住的感觉。短语be haunted by the specter of sth 便表示「被...的恐惧缠绕，笼罩在对...的恐惧中」。
举个例子：The country is haunted by the spectre of civil war. 内战彷佛一触即发，举国上下一片恐慌。
再比如去年CATTI 二级考试考了《卡梅伦回忆录》里的一句话：
A spectre haunts this book – the spectre of Europe.
很多同学不认识spectre这个词，直接蒙了。这句话其实是化用了英文版《共产党宣言》的开篇第一句：A spectre is haunting Europe, the spectre of Communism. 一个幽灵，共产主义的幽灵，在欧洲游荡。
这里A spectre haunts this book – the spectre of Europe. 便指：英国前首相卡梅伦的回忆录里，萦绕着一个挥之不去的阴影——脱欧。
我们再拿疫情举个例子：
We are still haunted by the spectre of the coronavirus.
steer clear of sb / sth 是一个词组，指「有意避开某人/某物」 (to avoid someone or something unpleasant or difficult)。
比如我们在外刊精读社第1季讲过一篇关于远程医疗的文章，文中有这样一句话：
As hospitals turn away patients with other ailments and many Chinese are confined to their homes or steer clear of clinics for fear of infection, millions are seeking treatment and advice on the internet.
随着医院停止接收其他疾病的患者，以及许多中国人在家自我隔离或担心去医院会感染病毒，成百上千万的人正在互联网上寻求治疗和建议。
steer [stɪə(r)] 为动词，本来是「掌方向盘，驾驶」的意思，如下图。
后来steer还可指抽象意义上的「操纵，控制，引导」 (to take control of a situation and influence the way in which it develops)，后面搭配副词或介词。
He managed to steer the conversation away from his divorce. 他设法把话题从他离婚一事上引开。
steer the conversation away from sth 这个词块大家记下来，表示「转移话题」。
再举个例子，《南华早报》一篇关于三孩政策的文章有这样一句话：
The changes, however, sparked concerns that the burden of additional maternity leave might steer companies away from hiring women, further putting women at a disadvantage in the workforce.
然而，这些变化引发了人们的担忧：额外的产假负担可能会使公司不再雇用女性，使妇女在劳动力市场中更加处于弱势地位。
in a ... manner 是一个词组，manner 指「方式，方法」，in a ... manner 表示「以...方式」。
再举一个美剧《绝望的主妇》里的一个例子
... unable to perform the assigned task in a timely manner.
近义词还有in a ... fashion，也可表示「以...方式」。
我们在远程工作只会说work from home？你out了！里讲过，混合工作可以说work in a hybrid fashion。
我们来看两个美剧里的例子：
I'm in love too. But in an orderly fashion.
Where did you get the money?
- In a honorable, ethical fashion.
chagrined [ˈʃægrɪnd] 为形容词，指「懊恼的；恼怒的；失望的」(to feel annoyed and disappointed)。
比如：Dale was chagrined that she wasn’t impressed.她没有被打动，这让戴尔很失望。
chagrin 为不可数名词，指「懊恼，失望」，尤其是指因为失败或错误引起的懊恼，失望。
短语to sb‘s chagrin 指「令...懊恼的是」。
举个例子：我的孩子们从没对音乐表现出一点兴趣，真让我失望。
My children have never shown an interest in music, much to my chagrin.
再比如《纽约时报》2020年曾发文感叹美国防疫不力：
在疫情以及总统选举临近之际，全世界都在看着美国，夹杂着震惊、失望，更多的是困惑。 Amid the pandemic and in the run-up to the presidential election, much of the world is watching the United States with a mix of shock, chagrin and, most of all, bafflement.
implore [ɪmˈplɔːr] 为动词，指「恳求，哀求」(to ask sb to do sth in an anxious way because you want or need it very much)，可以替换我们常见的beg。
这段话里有好几个值得学习的表达：
be presumed dead 是一个惯用语，表示「被认定为死亡」、
presume [prɪˈzjuːm] 为动词，可表示在法律上「认定，认为」。再举个例子：
Their nephew was missing, presumed dead. 他们的侄子失踪了，被认定为死亡。
oblivious [əˈblɪviəs] 为形容词，指「不知道的，没有察觉的」。
介词搭配为：be oblivious of / to sth，表示「不知道某事；未注意某事；未察觉某事」，相当于not aware of sth。
比如：He seemed oblivious to the fact that he had hurt her.他似乎没有察觉自己伤害了她。
fit 作动词，有「与…一致，和…相称，符合」的意思，The punishment fits the crime.便表示「让惩罚符合罪行」。
我们在MBTI 测试是伪科学吗？| 外媒说也学过这个词：
Along the way, it has spawned a multimillion-dollar business around its simple concept that everyone fits one of 16 personality types.
在这期间，它也催生了一个价值数百万美元的产业，而这一切都基于一个简单的概念，即每个人都能从这16种人格中找到自己。
club 这里可不是「俱乐部」的意思，而是指「球杆」，golf club 便指「高尔夫球杆」。
club 作名词，还有「棍棒」的意思。
See how he looks like a man with a club ?
And he clubbed me.
club 还可作动词，表示用棍棒「打」。
顺便回顾一下我们在威尔·史密斯打人这篇文章学过的不同打法：
They were trying to frame Turner.
factor 作名词，指「因素」，这个用法大家都很熟悉。
但很多同学不知道，factor还可作动词，短语 factor sth in / factor sth into sth 表示「把…因素包括进去，把...考虑在内」(to include something when you are doing a calculation, or when you are trying to understand something)，非常实用的一个表达。
比如：人们挣得更多了，但将通货膨胀因素考虑在内，他们并没有比以前宽裕。
People are earning more, but when inflation is factored in, they are no better off.
我在英剧《神探夏洛克》也碰到过这个词：
I forgot to factor in the traffic.
desert 作名词，是「沙漠」的意思，读作[ˈdezət]。
作动词，desert sb 指「抛弃，离弃，遗弃某人」，desert sth 指「舍弃，离弃某地方」，可以与大家最熟悉的abandon替换。此时，desert 读作[dɪˈzɜːt] ，重音在后。
举两个例子：
The birds have deserted their nest.这些鸟舍弃了它们的窝。
Helen was deserted by her husband. 海伦被丈夫遗弃了。
desert 还可表示「擅离，逃走」部队。
电影《乔乔的异想世界》里就出现过这个词：
He is a deserting coward. 他就是一个胆小的逃兵。
而deserted 为形容词，可表示「被抛弃的，被舍弃的」，比如：a deserted village 被舍弃的村庄 deserted wives 遭遗弃的妻子
deserted 还可表示「空无一人的」(empty and quiet because no people are there)。
我在英剧《神探夏洛克》里也遇见过这个词：
英国《卫报》就用了deserted来形容上海封城后空无一人的街道：
