书架上一直有本柯林斯（Collins）出品的《伊索寓言》（Aesop's Fables），最近才看完。
《伊索寓言》的来龙去脉不在此赘述，百度一下你就知道。我手头的这本全书 300 多页，收集了 300 多个寓言故事。每个故事只有 1-2 段，100-200 字左右，读起来很轻松，适合刚开始读英文书的成年人练手，也适合当作中小学生的课外读物。
fable 的特点书在序言中总结为：
The construction of a fable involves a minute attention to (1) the narration itself; (2) the deduction of the moral; and (3) a careful maintenance of the individual characteristics of the factious personages introduced into it.
寓言的特点是直白，没太多细节，也没有卖关子。讲个故事，说个理儿，不拖泥不带水。因此我们可以学习如何用精简的语言讲好一个故事。
比如，《龟兔赛跑》都听过，你会如何用英文讲这个故事呢？书中的版本可以适当作为参考，请先认真一字字读完下面这段英文：
The Hare and the Tortoise
A Hare one day ridiculed the short feet and slow pace of the Tortoise, who replied, laughing: "Though you be swift as the wind, I will beat you in a race." The Hare, believing her assertion to be simply impossible, assented to the proposal; and they agreed that the Fox should choose the course and fix the goal. On the day appointed for the race the two started together. The Tortosie never for a moment stopped, but went on with a slow but steady pace straight to the end of the course. The Hare, lying down by the wayside, fell fast asleep. At last waking up, and moving as fast as he could, he saw the Tortoise had reached the goal, and was comfortably dozing after her fatigue.
Slow but steady wins the race.
怎么样？是不是没你想得那么简单好读？这本书中的寓言风格大概就是这样，我们可以观察到：
1）整体语言风格偏正式
这段故事中就出现了 ridicule/swift/assertion/assent/fatigue 这些偏正式的词汇。
2）整体语言简洁，没有过多的修饰和细节
语法上大量使用从句和非谓语动词，让信息更紧凑。这段话一共 7 句，只有 On the day appointed for the race the two started together 和 Slow but steady wins the race 是简单句。
这样看来，语言虽短，五脏俱全，是学英文的好材料——不认识的词，去查；不懂的语法结构，去搜。我觉得它比《新概念》系列更有趣，有些地方值得直接背下来，比如上面出现的：

assent to the proposal（习惯搭配）
-
Tortosie never for a moment stopped（习语表达）
-
Slow but/and steady wins the race（常见说法）
我上面说，书中的英文版本「可以适当作为参考」，不必照单全收。我们可以读完故事后，简单分析书中的语言点，然后自己用英文讲一遍，争取用上几个书中的表达（比如 Slow but/and steady wins the race），这也是练习口语的好方法。
书中有很多故事我们早就很熟悉，比如小学课本上的《乌鸦喝水》：
诶，如何用比较正式的英文讲这个故事？ 看下书中的版本，这次我们一句一句读，边读边分析。
The Crow and the Pitcher
A Crow perishing with thirst saw a pitcher, and hoping to find water, flew to it with delight.
语句紧凑，结构简单工整，用 perishing
with thirst 和 hoping to find water 补充细节。想一想，如果是你，你会如何用英文写这句话呢？不一定书中的版本就更好，我们要做的是从对比中学习。
When he reached it, he discovered to his grief that it contained so little water that he could not possibly get at it.
这段话读起来很简单，但你会这样用 to his grief 和 get at 吗？除了一些正式的用词，书中也有许多动词短语，这样搭配使用读起来更有滋味。
He tried everything he could think of to reach the water, but all his efforts were in vain.
这句中我们可以注意：reach 相当于上一句的 get at；all his efforts were in vain 直接背下来，下次想说「努力付诸东流」的意思时就直接用它。
At last he collected as many stones as he could carry and dropped them one by one with his beak into the pitcher, until he brought the water within his reach and thus saved his life.
这句很简单，用了几个直接简洁的平实动词 collect/carry/drop/bring/save。值得注意的是这里用了我们熟悉但可能不习惯这样用的 until 连接句子，我想更多人的第一反应可能会用 In the end 之类。
Necessity is the mother of invention.
每个故事最后一句话总结道理，这样的话很多都成了英文中的常见说法。Necessity is the mother of invention 就是字面意思「刚需是发明之母」。比如在家隔离买菜困难，逼得我们我们自己动手种菜，是不是就可以苦中作乐用到这个说法？
好了，《乌鸦喝水》的英文版读完了，试着自己用英文复述一遍。怎么样？有没有「我学到东西啦！」的感觉？
读完书中的《龟兔赛跑》和《乌鸦喝水》，分析了语言特点，我想你应该明白为什么我说它适合用来学英语。不过要注意，我们不需要每篇都这样句句分析、篇篇背诵——对自己要求高是好事，不过没必要，更重要的是细水长流。
我们从一篇中学一两个语言点就够了，你如果够认真，整本书读完就收获了 300-600 个语言点，还要啥自行车？大多数人如果能读上 10-20 篇，看看我们熟悉故事的英文版本，顺便学点英语，就已经很不错了。
书后附录还有个 Words and Phrases adapted from the Collins English Dictionary。我很快翻了遍，也有收获，比如：without 作连词相当于 unless，use 可以表示 habit，move me not 相当于 do not make me angry。这些「知识」并不重要，对我最大的启发是读文学作品，除了查词典还要关注它在语境中的特殊意思，有些细节读不懂也不必太纠结。
以上就是我读这本 Aesop's Fables 的几点心得，主要是和你分享我会关注哪些地方、我会从什么角度阅读，希望对你也有启发。
