A friend of John’s

A friend of John's

______ is a well-informed gentleman. (This John’s old friend / That’s John’s old friend / This old friend of John / This old friend of John’s)

He is a friend of John. He is John’s friend. He is a friend of John’s."?

Some people erroneously stigmatize ‘a friend of mine’ or ‘an acquaintance of John’s,’ in which both an ‘of’ and a possessive form appear…Using both the s- and of-genitives together is an English idiom of long and respectable standing.

Is he a friend of yours? Is he a friend of you?

A friend of John's

This is Marie's portrait.

This is a portrait of Marie. This is a portrait of Marie's.

又比如a bone of the dog这一说法也有歧义,因为它可以指“狗吃的骨头”或者“狗的骨头”,如果写成a bone of the dog’s就没有歧义了,意思是“狗吃的骨头”。

He is a friend of the college. He is a friend of the college’s.
