n.   末端; 尽头; 结束; 结局

vi. & vt. (使)结束; (使)终止

考法：

• be at an end   结束; 终结
• at the end of...   在······的末尾; 在······的尽头
• in the end   最后; 终于
• bring/put an end to   结束; 终止
• by the end of...  ······结束时; 到······未为止(常与完成时连用)
• come to an end   告终; 结束; 完结
• make ends meet   使收支相抵; 勉强维持生计
• end up ( doing)...  (尤指经历一系列意料之外的事情后)最终处于······；到头来······
• end by doing sth.    以做某事而结束
• end up with... 以······告终
• end in...   以······结尾；以······结束

1. at the end of +时间名词或地点名词，表示“在……末，在……的尽头”。

He left for London at the end of last week.

他上周末动身去伦敦了。
At the end of the street you can see a bookstore.

在大街的尽头你会看见一家书店。

at the end of this month 在这个月末

at the end of last month 在上个月末

at the end of next month 在下个月末

at the end of the road 在路的尽头

反义词 at the beginning of ..... 

2. by the end of +时间名词，常用作过去完成时或将来完成时的时间标志。

   表示“到……末为止，在……以前”， 指到某一时间为止怎样，或在某一时间之前怎样。

They had learnt 10 lessons by the end of last month.

到上月底为止，他们已经学了10课。
They will have built the bridge by the end of the year.

到今年年底，他们就将把这座桥建好了。

1）跟将来的时间，就用一般将来时 

By the end of next month，I will finish reading this book.

到下个月末，我将读完这本书。  

2）跟现在的时间，就用现在完成时

By the end of this week ,I have written two books .

到这个星期末，我已经写了两本书了  

3）跟过去的时间，用过去完成时  

By the end of last month ,I had planted thousands of trees.

到上个月末，我已经种了数千棵树了 

As a great bad minton player, John ______ three medals by the end of last year.

A)wins         B)won     

C)has won   D)had won

很显然正确答案应该是D. 

By the end of 用于表示时间的场合，往往含有“不迟于”的意味，和at the end of 还是有区别的

如：

at the end of January  

一月底（指一月份的最后一天）是时间点的概念

by the end of January  

一月底之前（指一月份结束前的几天）是一个时间段的概念

in the end   “最后；终于”，同义词：finally，at last。

【举例】

We'll have an exam in English at the end of January．  

一月底我们要参加英语考试

By the end of last month ,I had planted thousands of trees.

到上个月末，我已经种了数千棵树了

He tried manytimes， and in the end，he succeeded. 

他尝试了很多次，最后，他成功了。

3. in the end是副词短语，意为“最后，终于”，相当于at last，它单独使用，后面不能跟of。

She got enough money in the end.

最后她终于弄到了足够的钱。

They won the game in the end.

她们最终赢得了这场比赛。

4.  to the end 表示“到·……底”，用作状语，指的是把某种行为持续到底。

 Go along this street to the end.

  沿着这条街走到头。

  He kept on working to the end.

  他坚持工作直到最后。

5、the end of... 的结尾/最后

I don't like the end of the movie.

我不喜欢电影的结尾。

表示“最后，终于”有好几个词：

finally，at last，at length，eventually，in the end。

finally：有两个意思，一个是用在列举中，用来引出最后一项，意思为“最后”。

The sky turned red, then purple, and finally black.

天空变成了红色，然后是紫色，最后成了黑色。

finally另一个意思是表示经过很长时间等待之后，终于发生或者实现的事情，意思为“终于”。

比如：

The word was finally given for us to get on board...

终于通知我们登乘了。（潜在的意思是等了好久）

at last：也可以表示等候或者耽误了很久之后感到不耐烦或者不方便，语气很强烈，意思是“终于，总算”。

比如：

James has passed his exams at last.

詹姆斯总算是通过了考试。（言外之意略带责备）

at last可以作为感叹语，单独使用，finally则不能这样使用。

如：

At last! Where the hell have you been?

总算是找到你了！你到底去哪里了？

另外需要注意，lastly也可以用来列举，引出最后一项内容，和at last意思不一样。Firstly, …Secondly, …Thirdly, …And lastly, ….。

at length只有表示很长时间的意思，并且at length有比较文学的意味。

比如：

At length my father went into the house.

我父亲最后还是进了屋。
