polish v. ①磨光，擦亮：

poor adj. ①贫困/穷的：
The organization was founded for the benefit of poor children.

②可怜的：The poor girl, having been scolded for not finishing homework on time, is in low sprits now.
这个可怜的女孩，因为没按时完成作业而被责骂，现在情绪低落。
③不好的，差的：The reason why he has resigned is poor health.他离职的原因是身体不好。
【拓展】①与定冠词连用表示“穷人”，具有复数意义：
Therich are for the plan, but the poor are against it.
