make sb do 有哪些高级替换？

今天继续为大家的四六级、考研作文助力！
 
我们在写作中经常会说到“让某人做某事”“使某人做某事”，提到这个表达，我们第一反应就是 make sb do，但这是个小学生级别的说法，早已被用滥，今天我给大家补充一些更新鲜、更地道的表达，给语言锦上添花，让阅卷老师眼前一亮：
 
一、make, cause, lead to
 
make sb do 是最简单的一个表达，表示“促使、使得”，比如父母要求孩子必须写完作业才能出去玩，我们可以说：
My parents always make me do my homework before I go out.
我父母总是要我做完作业再出去。
这里的 make 有“迫使、强迫”的意味，自上而下地使某人做某事。
 
再看一个例句：
She always makes me laugh. 
她总是让我发笑。
这里的 make 就是单纯的“让某人做某事”，没有强迫的意味。
 
cause sb to do 和 make sb do 含义相同，但更加正式，比如《经济学人》中曾有篇文章谈到了视频网站对青少年的不良影响，文中有这么一句话：
make sb do 有哪些高级替换？
It also banned videos of dangerous pranks, some of which have caused children to hurt themselves. 
平台也下架了危险恶作剧的视频，其中一些恶作剧视频导致孩子伤害了自己。
caused children to hurt themselves: 使学生伤害到自己。
 
此外我们也可以用 lead sb to do 表示，比如《经济学人》中曾有篇文章分析了人们为什么热衷于频繁升职，文中有这么一句话：
make sb do 有哪些高级替换？
This can lead you to lose control of your work-life balance.
这会使你失去对“工作-生活”平衡的掌控。
 
再比如面试的时候，考官可能会问你为什么选择这个专业，你可以说：
It was my interest in English that led me to study interpreting and translation. 
make sb do, cause sb to do 和 lead sb to do 这三个是最基本的表达。
 
二、prompt sb to do
 
prompt 的英文解释是 to make sb decide to do sth，比 make, cause 之类的词高级一点，经常出现在四六级、考研真题中，比如 2021年6月的英语六级第一套的阅读理解中 就有这么一句话：
Still, it is to be hoped that the Scottish government's bold move will prompt others to act.
尽管如此，人们还是希望苏格兰政府的大胆举措能促使其他政府采取行动。
prompt others to act: 促使其他政府采取行动。
 
再比如2020年考研英语一的阅读理解Text4中有一个选项也出现了这个词：
37. It can be learned from Paragraph 2 that the digital services tax...
[D] will prompt the tech giants to quit France.
根据第二段可知，法国数字服务税...
[D] 将促使科技巨头退出法国
 
2021年11月13日的《经济学人》中有篇文章讲到了辅助死亡（assisted dying），即医生给临终病人开出死亡药剂，以助其快速死亡、免受痛苦折磨，文中有句话也用到了 prompt sb to do：
make sb do 有哪些高级替换？
Some people worry that its availability may prompt health services to skimp on palliative care.
一些人担心，它的可用性可能会促使医疗服务部门在“保守治疗”方面节省开支。
skimp on sth 指“在某方面节省开支，在某方面吝啬”。
 
写作中我们也可以用 prompt sb to do 替换 make sb do，让表达更加高级。
 
三、motivate sb to do
 
motivate sb to do 略有不同，它的英文解释是：if something motivates someone to do something, it makes them want to do it，侧重让某人主动做某事。这个词很常见，比如《经济学人》中有篇文章讨论了科技产品对学习的利与弊，文中有这么一句话：
make sb do 有哪些高级替换？
While the computers did lead to some gains in cognitive skills, the authors concluded that access to a laptop didn't improve attendance. Neither did it motivate students to spend more time on their homework.
虽然电脑确实能提高认知能力，但作者总结到，笔记本电脑并不能提高出勤率，也不能使学生投入更多时间写家庭作业。
gain 在这里是名词，指“提高”，是 increase, improvement 的高级替换，lead to some gains in...的意思是“在...方面带来了提高，提高了...”，以后我们写作中表达“XX提高了YY”的含义时，除了 XX improves YY，也可以说 XX leads to some gains in YY.
motivate students to spend more time...的意思是：促使学生投入更多时间。
 
motivate 也常出现在考试真题里，比如2019年6月的英语六级第二套卷里有这么一个句子：
To motivate visitors to bring in more old shoes, Adidas Brazil promotes the program in stores by showing videos to educate customers and it even offers a discount each time a customer brings in an old pair of shoes.
为了让游客带来更多旧鞋，阿迪达斯巴西在商店里对这一项目进行宣传——通过播放视频来引导顾客，甚至提供旧鞋置换折扣（或：为每一位带来旧鞋的顾客提供折扣）。

 

四、induce sb to do
 
induce sb to do 更偏向于 persuade sb to do，即“诱使某人做某事”，是一个高频表达，我们看一个《月亮与六便士》里的例句：
"Your wife says that nothing you can do will ever induce her to divorce you. She's quite made up her mind. You can put any possibility of that definitely out of your head."
“你妻子说无论你怎么做都不会让她跟你离婚。她已经拿定主意啦。你就死了这条心吧。”
induce her to divorce you：让她跟你离婚、使她给你离婚。
 
五、allow/enable sb to do
 
表示“使、让”，外刊中更常用的是 enable，enable 由“en-”和“able”组成，前缀“en-”表示使动用法，比如 enlarge 使变大，endanger 使处于危险中；able表示“能够的”意思，所以合起来 enable 则表示“使...成为可能，使...能做某事”。我们可以用 enable sb to do 来替换 let sb do, make it possible for sb to do 等，在口语和写作中都可以使用。
enable sb to do 和 make sb do 的区别是，前者侧重于使某人能够做某事、使某人有条件做某事，而后者侧重于迫使、强迫某人做某事。
这个表达在外刊中经常出现，比如《经济学人》中有篇关于中国人脸识别公司的报道，文中有这么一句话：
make sb do 有哪些高级替换？
The firm already enables Alipay and Didi, a ride-hailing firm, to check the identity of new customers (their faces are compared with pictures held by the government).
旷视科技使支付宝和网约车公司滴滴能够核查新用户的身份（将他们的面孔与政府持有的照片做对比）。
或者采用一种更通顺的译法：
旷视科技已向支付宝以及网约车公司滴滴提供支持，帮助它们核查新客户的身份（将他们的面孔与政府持有的照片做对比）。
enable Alipay and Didi to check...：使阿里巴巴和滴滴出行能够核查...
 
这个表达也常出现在四六级、考研真题中，比如2017年6月的英语六级第一套中有这么一句话：
To match the growing demand, services are springing up to make it easier to publish research products online and enable other researchers to discover and cite them.
为了满足日益增长的需求，各种服务如雨后春笋般涌现，使在线发布研究结果更加容易，也使得其他研究人员能够发现并引用这些研究结果。

 

再比如，2019年12月的六级阅读理解中的两个选项也出现了这个表达：
46. B) Protect students from social pressures and enable them to face the world.
保护学生免受社会压力，使他们能够面对这个世界。
47. A) They enable students from different backgrounds to mix with each other.
学校实地考察使来自不同背景的学生能够相互交流。
they 代指 school field trips 学校实地考察。
mix 本义是“混合”的意思，当形容人时，则引申为“与人交往、相处”，同socialize.
 
allow sb to do 可以和 enable sb to do 完美替换，我们不再举例子了。
 
 
六、pave/clear the way for sb to do
 
pave the way for sb to do 是“为某人做某事铺路”，clear the way for sb to do 指“为某人做某事扫清道路”，这两个表达更接近 allow/enable sb to do，侧重于使某人有条件、能够做某事。
《纽约时报》中有篇文章，探讨了如何缩小阶级差距，文中有这么一句话：
make sb do 有哪些高级替换？
Internships pave the way for children to move seamlessly from their privileged upbringings to privileged careers without ever holding a job that is boring or physically demanding.
实习使孩子能够从优越的成长环境无缝进入优越的职业生涯，而无需从事枯燥或耗费体力的工作。
upbringing 指 the way in which a child is cared for and taught how to behave while it is growing up “抚养方式、成长环境”。
demanding 作为形容词，表示“要求高的”，比如 a demanding job 高要求的工作，文中 physically demanding 就是“对体力要求高的，耗费体力的”。
pave the way for children to...的字面意思是“为孩子做...铺平道路”，其实就是“让孩子能够做某事”的意思，写作中可以灵活替换 allow/enable sb to do.

关于“让某人做某事”“使某人做某事”的表达有很多，这里只是抛砖引玉。这些表达各有侧重，有的强调「外界」因素使得某人做某事，有的侧重「内在」动机，有的强调「有能力/条件」做某事，大家多读例句，在语境中体会它的含义和用法，写作中灵活替换。
 
其实这些词我们基本都认识，但写的时候却想不起来，一学就会，一用就废。我们在阅读中「学会」的表达，并不等于「掌握」，我们需要进行整理总结，并结合生活经历进行仿写造句，才能使这些表达真正内化、为我所用。
