XX也有不利之处
今日听书,听到一句话:
“But this knowledge and complexity come with downsides.”
Excerpt From Immune : A Journey into the Mysterious System That Keeps You Alive (Dettmer, Philipp)
这句话不正好可以作为英语写作中的转折段开头句吗?
前文列举了种种好处 ,然后笔锋一转:But XX comes with downsides. 表示「XX也有一些不利之处」。
come with downsides
通过查询 ludwig.guru 语料库,可以看到 downsides 前还可以搭配 distinct/substantial/serious 等形容词,But 也可以换成 Yet,例如:
Yet the mix comes with substantial downsides. (The New York Times)
In the past, any of these solutions that I’ve tried have come with serious downsides, including unreasonable requirements in terms of connection capabilities, up and downstream speeds, and more. (TechCrunch)
mini-writing
DingTalk, which was originally designed as an Alibaba-powered working platform for enterprises, is now applied in educational scenarios as a parent-teacher communication tool in the wake of the pandemic.
The convergence between technology and pedagogy empowers schooling to exceed the physical limits where teaching takes place solely within the walls of the classroom. This integration has been a catalyst for a new form of school assignments called ‘daka’, or to upload photos or videos remotely that prove students have finished homework assignments. It is held that the ‘daka’ assignments, usually require parents to help their kids, can boost parental involvement in education, thereby nurturing parent-child relationships. Meanwhile, the well-meaning ‘daka’ assignments not only facilitate school-to-home communication but also help students build self-discipline and maintain a robust body.
Yet such a fruit of blended learning comes with distinct downsides. Even second-graders have to ‘daka’, either intelligently or physically—for example, 5 minutes of reading story books, 20 mental math questions, and 100 skips/jump ropes—on the platform before midnight. Excessive tasks from each subject would always end up with a last-minute rush, where students and parents are placed undue pressure to finish the assignment in haste before it turns another day. Besides, the prolonged hours of eye use, either on screens or on worksheets, may result in visual fatigue, headaches, and even worse, school refusal/reluctance behaviors.
